Combining monotonicity and strong equity: construction and representation of orders on infinite utility streams

چکیده
This paper studies the nature of social welfare orders on infinite utility streams, satisfying the efficiency principle known asMonotonicity and the consequentialist equity principle known as Strong Equity. It provides a complete characterization of domain sets for which there exists such a social welfare order which is in addition representable by a real valued function. It then shows that for those domain sets for which there is no such social welfare order which is representable, the existence of such a social welfare order necessarily entails the existence of a non-Ramsey set, a non-constructive object. Q-anonymous social welfare relations on infinite utility streams
This paper studies a class of social welfare relations (SWRs) on the set of infinite utility streams. In particular, we examine the SWRs satisfying Q-Anonymity, an impartiality axiom stronger than Finite Anonymity, as well as Strong Pareto and a certain equity axiom. First, we characterize the extension of the generalized Lorenz SWR by combining Q-Anonymity with Strong Pareto and Pigou-Dalton E...
متن کاملPareto Principle and Intergenerational Equity : Immedi - ate
In an important contribution to the problem of aggregating infinite utility streams, Svensson (1980) shows the existence of a social welfare relation—a reflexive, transitive and complete binary relation over all possible infinite utility streams—that accommodates the axioms of Pareto and intergenerational equity. This possibility result is in sharp contrast with the seminal contribution by Diam...
متن کاملOrdering infinite utility streams
We reconsider the problem of ordering infinite utility streams. As has been established in earlier contributions, if no representability condition is imposed, there exist strongly Paretian and finitely anonymous orderings of intertemporal utility streams. We examine the possibility of adding suitably formulated versions of classical equity conditions. First, we provide a characterization of all ...

It has been known that, in aggregating infinite utility streams, there does not exist any social welfare function, which satisfies the axioms of Pareto, inter-generational equity and continuity. We show that the impossibility result persists even without imposing the continuity axiom. Hence, the problem of accommodating inter-generational equity is more obstinate than previously supposed. The p...
متن کاملIntergenerational equity: sup, inf, lim sup, and lim inf
We study the problem of intergenerational equity for utility streams and a countable set of agents. A numerical social welfare function is invariant to ordinal transformation, satis es a weak monotonicity condition, and an invariance with respect to concatenation of utility streams if and only if it is either the sup, inf, lim sup, or lim inf.
